Cover Crop Mixtures

High Card (Triticale/Clover Overwintering System)

Recommended planting window is mid-August through October. This mixture, consisting of triticale and clover, is designed to successfully overwinter and provide a viable option for spring “planting green” systems. Termination timing should be aligned with management objectives; mechanical termination via rolling/crimping is most effective at anthesis (heading stage with onset of pollen shed), which will occur later in the spring growing season.

Description

Mixture Formulation 80% Triticale / 15% Crimson Clover /  5% Daikon Radish

When seeded at approximately 50 lb/acre, the stand can be chemically terminated in the spring to facilitate planting into a high-residue mulch system, which contributes to early-season weed suppression and improved soil moisture conservation. The mixture actively captures and retains residual nutrients during the fall period, while the legume component contributes to biological nitrogen fixation, enhancing nitrogen availability for the subsequent crop.

Termination timing will significantly influence residue characteristics and nutrient cycling. Earlier termination (e.g., herbicide application prior to heading) results in a lower carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio, promoting more rapid microbial breakdown and quicker nutrient release. In contrast, allowing the triticale component to reach heading increases biomass and residue persistence but results in a higher C:N ratio and slower nutrient mineralization.

Seeding Rate: 50 lbs./ac as a cover crop, 100-125 lbs./ac if planted as a forage crop.
